Neal Schmitt Heavy-duty compression on the drums. Takes the sound from very polite to crushing. Very interesting. Gets to be a bit much in the instrumental part. Parallel compression and automation together would allow you to vary the sound. In the intro, when there’s no cymbals, that compression sounds awesome –but once the drummer moves over to the ride cymbal, the compression is When the band kicks in your vocals don’t rise– use automation to keep the vocals at a consistent level above the music. Listen to any pro song and you’ll notice the relationship of the vocals is usually consistent. Try to replicate that. The background vocals at the end are real quiet. The plucky bits are a bit distracting – they seem like an afterthought and here’s why – the vox have a great big reverb on, the drums have this heavy, washy compression. Now the plucky bit comes in and it’s fairly plain placed in the vox reverb, it might fit better. Or maybe not, , right? There’s some heavy compression distorting the background vocals – or did you distort them on purpose.

    Mix # 3 for MUS 204

terencerobertson Vocals are extremely present. there are certain points when the vocals and the guitars are competing with their frequencies. The drums are really quiet. They sound like they're really far away. Next time you should try to make the kick and the snare a little more present in the mix but over all it sounds pretty good man.

RobinGraves123 Overall a pretty good mix. I might not use so much reverb on the overhead mic track because it makes the cymbals splashy. The drums sound full in my 'phones. I would take off some of the compression on the guitars to let them breathe a little. The drums are overpowering the bass somewhat, but I thought the vocals were really good.

Neal Schmitt Skinner This mix is on its way to sounding great. The compression is keeping the sounds constrained. Drums – The kick is nice and loud but needs a bit of EQing to shave off some of the tubbiness. The snare is buried in the compressor – so the majority of the drum sound is cymbals and hi-hats. The compressor is cranking on those drums and a result, the snare is pushed back. Turn down the overheads and back off the attack a smidge and you’d be probably happier with the results. Bass – The bass seems to lay a good foundation. Not readily identifiable but certainly the bass gives this mix depth and richness. Keep that bass panned in the middle, rather than to the side. Helps keep the mix grounded. Guitars – edit/Fade unnecessary noise (especially in the intro and outro where those noise are more noticeable). I like the panning on the keyboard but by keeping the guitars up the middle the mix is prevented from being big and wide. Vox –For most of the song, the vox is on top of the music. A bit more reverb might be a good thing. Or maybe instead of louder, EQ’d to be bigger. The background vox really pop in, which I totally dig.

KevinMcGinn Hey great mix. I really like where the drums are sitting. The vocals are very strong the entire song which is good. The vocals could blend a little better though.

KPdragon You did an excellent job on cutting the extra buzzing and noises out. The start and finish is perfect. The only thing I could use is more panning. But that is just me. Overall this is very Professional. Wow wow wee wow.

Neal Schmitt Skinner I like the reverb on the vocals, It's very tasteful and appropriate! Did you put any of the instruments in that reverb? It keeps the music and the vox blending. Adding a bit of everything (not large amounts even, sometimes just a touch) into the reverb can help the song sound like a "band." The vox and vox reverb sound really good - just a bit apart from everything else. The intro sounds good - Good compression on the acoustic and the vox sounds is great. MIght need to HP filter the acoustic just a bit from the compression - but the droning open string s also kind of the part. Overall, this mix is pretty good. I wouldn't mind a little more punch in the low end - from the kick and the bass - just a smidge and a bit more of the electric - just a smidge also The loud vox, towards then end, get a little in front of the mix (meaning they get a bit loud) otherwise, it's a very listenable, enjoyable. mix! 15

KevinMcGinn Sounds Great. The backing vocals mix well with the lead vocals. The reverb effect sounds great.

BrotherWilliam Sounds good, lead guitar may be a little hot. Like the verb on the lead vox.

terencerobertson The instruments reverb is amazing and well used but on the vocals it sounds like shes swimming in it. my suggestion would be just a little bit lighter on the reverb for vocals next time or it may just be the reverb choice that you have.

Neal Schmitt Andy wow - nice job. The mix sounds pretty smooth. You took a lot of sounds out - very interesting. Great job editing the end. You nailed it! The lead vocal is nice and present but not overbearing. I like your reverb setting. I wonder what a little less might sound like. I miss the electric piano, there's a lot of space below the strings and above the bass. I'd like the kick drum a bit louder. The kick is a integral part of the foundation. The bass guitar is at a good level but the 808 sound and kick drum are drowned out. It seem like there's a lot of sounds in the middle, like the tambourine and the guitars - Are the panned away from the middle? Maybe a hair less on the stings in the chorus. It sounds good in the verse cos it's a milder part. Once it's playing the melody, the strings are a little much (for me) Good ending! I give it a 14/15

Neal Schmitt Recording sounds clean. thanks for turning the hi-hat down. Sounds good. Add a few more measures, tweak the mix a bit in the fall and you could submit this to music licensing sites. Well done.

Neal Schmitt Nice job - As you saw, you weren't alone in the headphone situation. Start headphones at 3. Great job including mp3 and .wav in your session file.
