This is a song my good friend Luke Sefton wrote. It was part of his propsal to his soon to be bride. She said yes! I would like to think she said yes because the song sounded so good (recorded and mixed by me) but more than likely it was his manly l...

Raining Oranges - Smile For Me

This is my band "Raining Oranges"! We recorded this during the summer of 2007. I had nothing to do with the tracking besides playing the guitar. I did, however, mix and master this. Any feedback is good so bring it on..!
Neal Schmitt Wow. Sounds really good! These picky suggestions are obviously my opinion. I also listened on small earbuds. I love that the vocals are big and loud and clear! and in tune! I'd love to hear the chorus vocal doubled to make it special. Or you could simulate doubling with an ADT effect. Nothing too crazy, just make the chorus wider and grander, not necessarily louder. Like the panning on the guitar and piano. both instruments sound great. The bass guitar seems really tucked in - could be the missing link to add warmth and forwardness to this mix. There's some low-mids in the cymbals (makes the cymbals sound cheap) that a bit of cut eq would help - might soften them up. Google "don't wanna know why whiskeytown" - sorta similar feel. Even the bass guitar on that song is tucked way, way down. From an arrangement standpoint - I wonder what going to the intro piano line after the big distorted bridge would sound like instead of ending on it. Big bridge, bring it down, build it back up and all end together. instead of big bridge, everyone's playing, deconstruct. Can't wait to hear more.over 2 years ago

Neal Schmitt Very aggressive. I like! I feel like the the track's clipping but I kinda like it so aggressive but maybe it should be tamed ever so slightly. The acoustic and Scott's voice are raging. The tone/playing of the acoustic has tons of attack and really fits. Same with the electric gtr - when it comes in - it really comes in!! Maybe lower the acoustic with automation during the verses - add some dynamics and it'll make the big parts bigger. The kick sounds a bit elusive. It pops in and out and the tone I'm not in love with. Remove a bit of the hollowness - don't make it too soft or pillowy - just maybe add some thump. and tighten down on the compression to keep the kick a bit more consistent. The snare sounds overdriven (as kinda does the whole track) The cymbals need some attention too - EQ out the muddy midrange. If in fact the track's clipping, it's really effecting the cymbals. The crash cymbals are probably my least favorite thing about this track. (That's pretty picky I know.) Man, the electric sounds great. The bit of reverb you have I think sounds appropriate. Just a few minor quibbles on an otherwise raging mix. Nice job.almost 3 years ago

music2kelly Awesome! Love the moving parts: piano, shaker, guitar. Is the instrument with the long notes a flute? I am having trouble figuring out what is not sequenced. Guitar is not and the flute? Nice work!about 3 years ago
Neal Schmitt ouch - I think I know what happened here. Fix and repost. This hurts for two reasons. 1) cos it does and 2) cos it could be good. and after you tune the guitar to a tuner, plug the guitar into a amp like a man!about 3 years ago

music2kelly Very catchy! I'm guessing the guitars are not sequenced and the drums are. Everything is at a good level, the guitars are right above the mix and l like the way the shaker pops out. Nice job!about 3 years ago
funckmastakilla This could easily be a theme for a move like days of the new or a classic teen flick.about 3 years ago
Neal Schmitt This one works well. the songs works and there's some cool stuff going on. Great drum programming. It's just that darn DI guitar. Argh. Grab a compute with amplitude and tweak it out. You'll be much happier. Also, play with panning, the guitars seems stacked up in the middle. go wide!! Here's what someone else had to say - I really like the teen flick song.... funky rockish guitar....about 3 years ago

music2kelly Oooo....movie soundtrack: The sinister dark figure lurks in the background with the helpless victim in the foreground. A surprising start, it started sounding like a regular song. I am going to say the guitars are "live" but I can't figure out what else is. Bass?about 3 years ago
Neal Schmitt The bass sound choses is awesome. I totally dig that grindy sound Cool layers with the percussion. Adds a nice complexity. The guitars are piled up in the middle again. pan! pan wide! Like the part, not in like with the tone though. This piece works really well. There's a tension as more and more sounds are unveiled. Nice. except for the cutoff decay. Otherwise, very solid effort.about 3 years ago

music2kelly Drums are sequenced and violins. Very calming and seamless. The violins seemed to be a little...off but other then that very nice!about 3 years ago
funckmastakilla The pice sounds nice and calm, it also has a bit of glee and young love or something your hypnotizing me with that lovely guitar playing man nice piceabout 3 years ago
Neal Schmitt This song has a nice mood. From an arrangement standpoint, the guitar parts are very interesting, although panned center, the different parts stick out. Some effects would be so nice - a little delay, a little reverb The bell sound, like on a bicycle helps, the light, airy mood. Programming and homework aspect aside, this is a nice song, A little more TLC would go a long way.about 3 years ago
