Williams Trenching Inc. Interview

Interviewing my parents, owners of Williams Trenching Inc.
Neal Schmitt Very interesting Kel. How fun to have your parents get to tell their story. I like how you approached this - works very well. I think they made some great points. Are they still running the business out of there home. You mentioned that they would change that part but it wasn't clear if that was just at the beginning or if it's still that way. I liked that they talked about finding the right market, the different goals they had with the business how they two complimented each others strengths and weaknesses and especially how it takes passion to keep the business moving. All amazing points. Production was OK. Your voice sounds very hollow, like it was recorded in a car. The telephone is pretty clear. Music is very buried when it's there.about 3 years ago

Neal Schmitt cool song. Like the use of some double tracked and singled track vocals. Adds diversity. the music seems very mono. Guitar and drums are really stacked on top of each other. Snare cuts through the mix nicely. Floor tom could have used a bit of dampening - no amount of EQ or compression can alleviate that ringing. That starts all the way back in tracking. But, for what you've got - sounds pretty good. Bass guitar is kinda tucked in except at the end. - Which, I don't get the drum fade at the end. Vocals sit nicely on top of the mix - Wish the voice had a bit more excitement - singer seems a tad bored with her own vocals. A background screaming track might have helped.over 3 years ago

Neal Schmitt The drummer loves the floor tom! The drum sounds are pretty good. The snare's got a cool presence that cuts through the mix. The kick is a bit muffled but it's audible and has enough punch to help drive the song. Cymbals are never overpowering. The bass guitar is a bit elusive. I like the hitting of the high notes but it's out of tune or the bass is hitting a couple of wrong notes? What happens to your mix at 1;17? Everything changes. I like the distortion on the vox. I wish the guitar was a bit bigger/louder/deeper/less mono. Um, the lyrics are kinda disturbing. "once again mommy fails!" there are some noticeable band flubs that slipped through - most notably at the beginning and the end.over 3 years ago

RobinGraves123 Hi Kelsey- Nice job. You might want to automate the vocal track and turn it up during the louder instrument parts, though.over 3 years ago
KPdragon This was as good as bank job can be if only there were something worth stealing from this. The phone echo feels misplaced. There are some parts that are louder than need to be and mask the vocals. I need more automation. How ever I like the ending the best. It was an awesome ending. So that was good. -love Kaleb-over 3 years ago

NickBoFoSho This song definitely reminds me of you. The singer almost sounds like you. The guitar sounds freakin great but the bass is really hard to find in the mix. I know this style of music isn't suppose to sound nice and pretty but maybe if you turn the drums up and clean up the bass it'll be more punchy and coherent (unlike mommy). Good job.over 3 years ago

RobinGraves123 Hey Kelsey! So just a few minor things for the mix. The lead vocals are completely buried under the BVG. The cymbals sound a little splashy, maybe a filter on these to take out the splash. The guitar solo is a little low, kinda buried in the back. The second part of the song needs to come down in volume. The bass sounds good in the mix; a nice steady foundation. I like the acoustic too.over 3 years ago
Neal Schmitt I think is mix is a good starting point – but it’s easy to hear how the power doesn’t transfer. Plus, volumes are all over the place. As it is, this is step 1 in mixing, getting a rough mix with volume and pan to work with.over 3 years ago

Skinner Wow. Sounds well mixed, just a few things for ya to think about. Personally, I think the kick could stand to be a bit louder. It's not competing with the bass at all in volume. The volume on the cymbals and HH are great, I wonder if you put them in verb at all. The drums could be even a little heavier with the dirty compression. The guitars sound nice and even, I can tell you worked on getting the one to not peak. Nice sound overall, could have used a bit more in some places. Vox - God this guy needs something. You definitely helped him out in the mix, could have used more of the autotuned one within the mix. Backing vox are sitting alright, might even use a bit less to make lead pop out more. Overall, not bad.over 3 years ago
Neal Schmitt Kel Cut the noise at the top Drums are buried behind a wall of guitar. In some cases this could be a good thing but I’m not sure that the case here. I hear the hi-hats and some of the snare but the kick, which is the foundation for the rhythm, is missing. In the verse, you’ve emphasized the low harmony, not the lead vox. If the vocals are the focus of this mix, they often get lost in certain parts and completely overwhelm the mix in other parts. Sometimes the low harmony is the lead and other times the background vox are the focus. Multiple tracks might be needed to wrangle a consistent volume out of the vocals. (How do you tell the difference between the lead vox and a harmony? One will stop while the other will keep going) Listen to each section and in section, listen line by line to determine the right volume for the lead vox and build the mix around that volume. Compression is there to level and EQ is there to add clarity but the tools only work if you apply them. In the second verse, the clean swirly guitar overtakes the vocals. When you put together a quick mix using volume and pan. Don’t forget PAN. Use the sides for space but leave the kick, snare, bass and lead vox in the center. Once you have that volume of each section, build the drum kit around the vocal. The kick can be a little loud cos it won’t interfere with the vocal but the snare might have to be kept back a little. Or, add reverb to the snare to put the snare behind the vocal. Add some bass guitar – EQ and compress to work within the kick parameters you’ve set. Pan the guitars wide and wrap around the other sounds like a blanket.over 3 years ago

Skinner Vocals sound nice, did you put any verb on them? Could definitely use some of that bass there when it comes in, bit more kick too. Kick sounds great when it's in the second time. I like the electric guitar's level, it's not too overbearing. It is really shining towards the 2:35 mark. Overall great job dude.over 3 years ago
Neal Schmitt Kel The compression on the vox sounds pretty good. His voice is a little on top of the mix for me (ending "star I'm wishing on: part), but in most cases, you'd want to err on side of too loud, rather than too quiet. (that took me a long time to figure out.) A high pass filter on the acoustic would take some of the rumble out - there's just this low end hum that's throughout the intro. Make you like it - I don't know, I'm not a fan tough. The kick drums sounds round and phat. I dig. The snare may be a hair loud - but I almost wonder if the quieter snare would ruin the mix. I wouldn't mind the bass guitar and electric to be louder, That's me, though. 'This is kind of a charming mix. The overall sound was quiet, monitor your Master Fader to see how much headroom you have- in this case, you had a lot to work with. 12/15 nice comments skinner!over 3 years ago

Skinner Good overall, I could definitely hear your reverb in the drums, not so much in the vocals. Great job dude.over 3 years ago
terencerobertson Freaking amazing with the instrument volume and reverb and the panning of the tamberine. However, there is a bit of a mess up during the last chorus of your song and you can hear the errors of your editing. Your kick becomes a little off at the start of the last chorus section. The vocals should be turned up a little more as well in my opinion but I was kind of at conflict with them because they blended in so well that it was hard to come to a conclusion over all. In the end the entire mix was good just be careful when it comes to copying and pasting. Make sure you have something to go off of to make sure its on beat.over 3 years ago
Neal Schmitt The first 2/3 of the song is great. Sounds are in their place. Lead vox is above the music but not too far. The reverb on the snare is really cool. It's big and splashy with the apporpriate decay time as to not keep bleeding into the next hit. The strings may be a bit too loud. This is pretty common.High Frequency sounds don't need much volume to attract attention. Cool tambourine panning in the 2nd chorus! Obviously, the ending is a bit of a mess. It sounds like you had the back vox - which should then give you the rest of the tracks. But don't let the ending discourage you, the first part sounds really nice 13/15over 3 years ago
